Marvel’s Wolverine has been one of the most hotly anticipated releases of this year as it marks the second big-name superhero entry (after the highly acclaimed Spider-Man games) from developer Insomniac’s unique venture into the Marvel Universe which has also created whole new versions of many beloved characters while churning out terrific gameplay mechanics to craft highly enjoyable and replayable experiences. And while the developer has totally knocked it out of the park with the previous three Spider-Man games, it was naturally anticipated that they’d be able to deliver another gem of a title in the form of Wolverine.
But as it turns out from the plethora of reviews, Marvel’s Wolverine is not nearly as great as the Spider-Man games. While the narrative is a fresh take on the titular character within a vastly new setting and cast of familiar characters, Wolverine doesn’t quite stick the superhero landing as it actually falters where it matters most–the gameplay. And although the combat oozes with lots of flashy and ferocious claw attacks, it gets pretty repetitive the longer you play and lacks the variety and free-form style that was present in the Spider-Man games which made the combat feel consistently fresh and unpredictable.

These ratings come across as shockingly disheartening as no one would expect Wolverine, the newest title from Insomniac, which is one of the most acclaimed studio under Playstation, to score these subpar numbers. But regardless of the ratings, it’s safe to say that if you’re a fan of Wolverine, you’ll still enjoy the game a lot, in more ways than one.
Marvel’s Wolverine comes out in two different editions–the Standard version of the game will cost you $69.99 while the Digital Deluxe version sports a price tag of $79.99. There’s no mention of a collector’s edition that’s geared towards enthusiasts so if you were hoping for physical collectibles like statues and maybe action figures, looks like there won’t be any of that.
