Double Fine is a very important studio, and they date back to the day the golden era of gaming was coming to a close. Now they are indies, and this is very important because they don’t have to rely on Xbox anymore, in fact, they have managed to get all of their IPs back. This is great, because Xbox has nothing they can do now and recovering the creative things that defined them such as Psychonauts is going to help them become the indie team they wanted to be. There is some one offs here and there, most of them are great like Kiln, unfortunately they went unnoticed because they are covered by triple A garbage.
Double Fine is back
And it is great that they have come back, we need more teams like them to keep gaming alive because the same derivative things and predatory mechanics will only drain the lifeblood of gaming. There is a fighting chance for indies if more legacy companies decide to go for more simple yet endearing projects. Alas, this is unlikely because the money one can get if they strike gold is bigger in the upper ranks, but considering they have been cutting people left and right from work going indie seems the only way.
Double Fine became popular during the PS2 era, in fact, many game developers that we know and love today became huge with that console. The PS2 had an amazing library of games and we can still discover unknown things today, it is insane how many games people skipped on. Psychonauts was well received when it launched for PS2, and it became a cult hit with people waiting for a potential sequel, the sequel did happen, and it seems that people loved this one too. I feel like Double Fine will be fine.
