PC players can now explore the decaying underwater city of Rapture in virtual reality thanks to a newly released mod for BioShock Remastered. Developed by modder mohamad-balouza and recently highlighted by content creator Beardo Benjo, the fan project transforms Irrational Games’ acclaimed 2007 first-person shooter into a complete VR experience featuring native motion controls via the open-source BioShock Remastered VR mod.
The conversion allows players to navigate Rapture’s iconic art-deco corridors, aim weapons, and trigger plasmids using full hand-tracking controls. By adapting traditional camera movements and combat systems into interactive VR mechanics, the mod gives fans a brand-new way to experience the title’s atmospheric storytelling and tactical combat. Given that publisher 2K Games has never released an official VR entry for the franchise, this fan effort solves a long-standing request from virtual reality users looking for deep, single-player campaigns.
This release arrives during an unusually long gap for the franchise. The series has lacked a major new entry since BioShock Infinite debuted in 2013, making community developments the main outlet for fans eager to return to the universe. Following Infinite, series creator Ken Levine shuttered Irrational Games to build a smaller development team, leaving the property inactive for years while players waited for official word on a sequel.
While fan projects currently fill the void, several official projects remain in development. Studio Cloud Chamber Games is actively working on BioShock 4, which recent leaks indicate may feature a semi-open world set in Antarctica, though rumors suggest development has encountered internal delays. Meanwhile, Levine is leading development on Judas, an upcoming project that mirrors the narrative and mechanical style of his earlier work. Additionally, a BioShock movie is in the works at Netflix with director Francis Lawrence attached. Until those official projects arrive, this VR conversion offers the most compelling reason to return to Rapture.
