Raven Software Confirms Removal of Grappling Hook from Call of Duty: Warzone

Raven Software has announced that the Grappling Hook will be removed from standard Battle Royale and Resurgence playlists in Call of Duty: Warzone later this August. The decision follows months of persistent player feedback, ongoing balance issues, and technical bugs that altered the fundamental pacing of standard matches.

Originally introduced alongside the Wall Jump in experimental limited-time modes, the Grappling Hook was integrated into standard play during Season 3. Raven Software initially intended the tool to raise the game’s skill ceiling by giving players creative options for traversing terrain and scaling structures. However, its implementation quickly sparked debate within the community, as the rapid vertical mobility drastically altered map positioning, rooftop control, and traditional combat engagements.

We plan on removing Grappling Hooks from standard Battle Royale and Resurgence playlists later this month.

Despite multiple balancing attempts by the developers, the movement mechanic remained a point of contention. Over recent updates, Raven Software introduced targeted adjustments to curb its dominance, including increasing its Fire Sale cost, lowering contract spawn rates, adding minimap tracking via the Surveyor perk, and reducing its speed during Season 4 Reloaded. Despite these tweaks, developers concluded that the item continued to grant aggressive players low-risk repositioning power, ultimately disrupting the overarching balance of the meta.

Community reaction to the announcement has been split. Opponents of the Grappling Hook celebrated its upcoming removal, citing its tendency to trivialize high-ground strategy and create unfair flanks, alongside persistent glitching issues. Conversely, fans of the mechanic argued that it brought fresh energy and speed to traversal, particularly on larger maps like Avalon. With the tool set to exit standard playlists, player attention has now shifted toward other powerful items currently impacting match balance, including Juggernaut Armor and the Specialist bonus.
