Santa Monica Studio has officially set February 16, 2027, as the launch date for God of War Laufey, placing the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive squarely in the middle of an unusually crowded early-year release window. Announced during a San Diego Comic-Con panel on July 24, the news arrives less than two months after the game’s initial reveal at Sony’s June 2026 State of Play.
The brief turnaround between reveal and release underscores Sony’s confidence in the project. Rather than relying on a brief teaser, the initial June announcement showcased roughly 20 minutes of real-time gameplay from the title’s opening sequence. That extensive demonstration indicated that core systems were already firmly in place, aligning with early industry reports from sources like Bloomberg that projected a mid-2027 arrival for the prequel.
By selecting mid-February, Sony is positioning its flagship action franchise against several high-profile competitors. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled to arrive on February 12, followed closely by Persona 4 Revival on February 18 and Playground Games’ Fable reboot on February 23. Players who purchase the premium edition of Fable will also gain early access on February 18, creating a three-day window where three major releases hit the market simultaneously.
Despite the immediate pressure of that release corridor, Laufey serves a distinct purpose in Santa Monica Studio’s broader release strategy. Creative director Cory Barlog confirmed during the same Comic-Con panel that a separate, main-line entry starring Kratos remains in development and will follow Laufey in the future. Focusing on Atreus’ mother, Faye, allows the studio to explore uncharted Norse mythology while maintaining momentum for the larger franchise.
