Game of Thrones: War for Westeros Delayed to Early 2027

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros has been officially delayed to early 2027 as developer PlaySide Studios extends its development timeline to refine the upcoming real-time strategy title. Originally revealed during Summer Game Fest with a projected 2026 release window, the Melbourne-based studio confirmed the postponement in its latest development update, citing a need for additional polish to meet quality standards. Despite the schedule shift, PlaySide noted that core development is progressing smoothly, with plans to share a deeper look at the game’s mechanics in the second half of the year.

Alongside the schedule change, the studio provided new details on how major lore figures function as Hero units on the battlefield. Iconic commanders like Jon Snow and Tywin Lannister possess unique leveling paths, unlockable skills, and combat buffs designed to bolster surrounding troops. Jon Snow’s primary ability operates as an area-of-effect rallying call centered directly on his position, increasing the effectiveness of nearby units. In contrast, Tywin Lannister can place his rallying buff anywhere within his immediate vicinity, granting roughly 50 percent more situational coverage to support flexible troop management.

These commander mechanics feed into a real-time strategy foundation built around fast-paced squad control and direct unit counters. Players will command one of four major factions at launch: House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, or the Night King’s White Walker army. Combat relies heavily on tactical match-ups across open battlefields; cavalry charges quickly disrupt exposed archer formations, while dense groups of infantry are highly vulnerable to massive giants capable of hurling enemy soldiers into the air.

PlaySide also showcased its map design with Ashemark, a two-lane arena constructed specifically for one-on-one engagements. The map focuses heavily on choke points, defensive strongholds, and flanking routes, forcing players to manage territorial control while maintaining forward pressure. While strategy fans will have to wait a bit longer to step onto the virtual battlefields of Westeros, the added development time gives the studio room to refine unit balancing and map design ahead of its 2027 debut.
