Undead Labs has finally broken its silence on State of Decay 3, debuting a substantial gameplay trailer at the latest Xbox Games Showcase six years after the title’s initial announcement. The reveal provides a much-needed update on a project that had remained entirely under wraps since its premature teaser in 2020, which aired before active development had even begun.
The new footage confirms that the studio is sticking close to the franchise’s established survival mechanics rather than reinventing the wheel. The trailer follows a small group of survivors executing a coordinated assault on an undead hive. Familiar core systems make a return, including vehicular travel, customizable weaponry, and the series’ signature randomized survivors backed by permanent death mechanics.
While the fundamental loop of managing a community during a blood plague remains intact, the sequel introduces evolving variations of the undead to alter combat dynamics. Undead Labs is positioning the title as a mainstream bridge to deeper survival sandboxes, maintaining traditional features like hideout upgrades and weapon maintenance. Xbox has also confirmed post-launch longevity plans, with digital storefronts already listing upcoming downloadable content modeled after State of Decay 2’s historical updates.
In a notable shift for Microsoft’s release strategy, State of Decay 3 is scheduled to launch across Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 5 platforms. This multiplatform approach marks a distinct departure from traditional first-party exclusivity, separating it from other showcase highlights like Clockwork Revolution, which remains an Xbox exclusive. Current release windows slate the survival horror title for a 2027 launch.
