One of the biggest showcases of the recent State of Play event from Sony was God of War Laufey which stars Faye, Kratos’ wife, in a spin-off adventure that takes place after her death at the start of Ragnarok. The upcoming game is set to be an all-out action title that can provide a similar experience to many of the earlier entries in the God of War series (featuring full aerial combat as well as a jump button which was absent from both God of War 2018 and Ragnarok).
The overall combat system also feels really fluid, deep and spectacular so it’s safe to say that if you have played the earlier God of War titles (mainly the original trilogy), you’re going to love God of War Laufey.
However, that doesn’t mean Santa Monica is leaving Kratos behind as future God of War games will still be centered around him as the main protagonist, Santa Monica boss Cory Barlog recently confirmed in an interview on Youtube.
“It’s exciting. Faye is, while it’s a different thing, it’s still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly want to explore, all these different characters in there. But there’s always going to be Kratos games throughout the whole history.”
Also, in a follow up on Twitter/X, the official account of Sony Santa Monica has teased “many more stories” that are in store for God of War, with Kratos himself as the centerpiece of the narrative experience.
The upcoming God of War Laufey seems like a pretty interesting detour for the franchise that’ll likely help the devs explore another branch of the Norse Mythology that’s apart from the mainline titles, while experimenting with it’s combat system to great effect and possibly create the most dazzling action title in the modern trilogy of God of War.
God of War Laufey is expected to release sometimes in next year.
