Sony closed out its latest State of Play presentation with a surprise look at the next entry in Santa Monica Studio’s flagship franchise, officially titled God of War: Laufey. Moving away from the traditional focus on Kratos, the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive shifts the spotlight entirely to his late wife, Faye, offering a deep dive into her untold story through 20 minutes of continuous raw gameplay.
The extensive gameplay demonstration opens immediately following the events of Faye’s funeral pyre, a poignant moment familiar to fans of the 2018 reboot. From there, the narrative takes an unexpected turn into the afterlife. Players step into the shoes of Faye—also known by her Giant name, Laufey—as she awakens in a mystical realm known as the Everywhen. According to the developers, her journey through this supernatural plane is fueled by a mission to protect Kratos and Atreus in the mortal realm, effectively acting as a cosmic guardian from beyond the grave.
Combat looks remarkably distinct from the heavy, deliberate axe-swings of Kratos. The footage highlights a combat system built around Faye’s speed, battlefield control, and relentless agility. Interestingly, the reveal confirmed a handful of bizarre pre-show rumors that initially divided the community. Faye is joined on her journey by a small animal companion and an intelligent gelatinous cube, alongside a unique weapon featuring sentient, magical ribbons that communicate with her.
The preview also signals a massive structural shift for the franchise by expanding beyond the confines of Norse mythology. Environmental cues and Mongolian-speaking adversaries featured in the footage indicate that Faye’s journey will cross historical and cultural pantheons. While Santa Monica Studio stopped short of giving a definitive release date, God of War: Laufey is scheduled to launch on the PlayStation 5 “soon,” positioning itself as a major creative departure for the series following the shadow-dropped prequel, Sons of Sparta, earlier this year.
