Tom Kane, the veteran voice actor whose decades-long career defined major portions of the Star Wars and Call of Duty franchises, has died at the age of 64. The news was confirmed by Galactic Productions via a social media post, which honored his extensive contributions across animated television, film, and interactive media. Kane had previously retired from voice acting in September 2021 following health complications from a stroke he suffered the prior year.
Kane’s impact on gaming and animation is perhaps most heavily tied to his work as Yoda. He first took on the iconic Jedi Master in the 2000 video game Star Wars Episode 1: Jedi Power Battles, going on to voice the character across more than 20 distinct gaming projects, including Republic Commando and both iterations of Battlefront 2. His performance eventually carried over into television, where he became a cornerstone of both Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series, additionally lending his talents as Admiral Yularen and the show’s distinct, commanding intro narrator.
Beyond the galaxy far, far away, Kane was highly regarded by the first-person shooter community for his role as Takeo Masaki in the Call of Duty franchise. Debuting in 2008’s World at War, Kane voiced the prominent Zombies mode character for a decade, wrapping up his run with 2018’s Black Ops 4. His final industry performance was captured in 2022’s LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, completing a portfolio that spanned nearly 50 distinct video game titles over his 45-year career.
Throughout his time in the studio, Kane’s range allowed him to slide into a variety of high-profile properties outside his primary roles. He frequently portrayed Magneto in various Marvel titles, including Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, and voiced Commissioner Jim Gordon in Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham Asylum. His passing marks the loss of an incredibly versatile performer whose vocal work helped shape the childhoods and gaming experiences of millions worldwide.
