Although the newly released Crimson Desert is getting high praises for it’s sprawling and lush open world and engaging combat, it’s narrative remains one of the lackluster elements of the game along with characters that leave a lot to be desired. It’s not remotely close to the level of storytelling we’ve seen in peerless open world titles like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Red Dead Redemption 2 with it’s narrative sticking out like a sore thumb. And now Pearl Abyss CEO Heo Jin-young has also acknowledged that the main plotline in Crimson Desert could’ve been a lot better.
As reported by Yonhap News Agency, Heo Jin-young stated the following during Pearl Abyss’ regular general shareholders’ meeting held at the company’s headquarters on yesterday: “I sympathize to some extent with the disappointment users feel regarding the story,” he added “I think it would have been nice if we could have done a better job with it. The production team tried to make up for the shortcomings in the remaining time, but ultimately, we focused on strengthening the gameplay, which is what we do best.”
At least they’re clearly aware of the issues but it seems there won’t be any story based DLCs in the near future as according to the CEO, Pearl Abyss is aiming to improve the base game through multiple patches: “While it is good to see sales driven by expansion packs, I believe there are games that generate revenue by increasing sales of the base game as content expands,” he said. “I want to make strategic decisions that ensure the base game of Crimson Desert sells well.”
He also remarked on the difficulty level in Crimson Desert which is proving to be a barrier for many players: “I understand that user convenience is being prioritized. Various streamers and influencers will be active to solidify the community and bridge the entry barrier for new users.”
Crimson Desert has sold over 3 million copies since release and is steadily shaping up to be one of the big hits of this year.
