The next mainline entry in the iconic Tomb Raider series of games is set to be a continuation of the Survivor saga of titles that are namely Tomb Raider 2013, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which is a modernized re-telling of protagonist Lara Croft’s story for a new generation of gamers. It was also earlier revealed that the upcoming remake titled Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is going to take place after the survivor trilogy of titles which was a franchise reboot by developer Crystal Dynamics.
And although Catalyst will not be released until 2028, the devs have revealed in a recent interview that it’ll feature the same version of Lara Croft from both the survivor saga of titles as well as in the remake. This makes for a streamlined depiction of the iconic character spanning multiple eras of gaming and console generations.
During a Q&A event at Gamescom (via GamesIndustry), Raul Siqueira, game director at Crystal Dynamics, has confirmed that both Legacy of Atlantis and Catalyst will star the same version of Lara Croft. However, he also assured all players of the original Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis that the upcoming remake will stay faithful to the spirit of the older title.
“Obviously, we are making the games together,” he said. “However, it is very important for us to distinguish that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is completely its own project and we are making sure that we are staying faithful to the original game. When it comes to specifics of where Lara is in her journey moving forward, we want to be respectful to both the games that came before and the games that came after.
“The Lara you see here is the same Lara from the Survivor era [Tomb Raider 2013, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which tell Lara’s origin story], and it will be the same Lara in our projects moving forward.“
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is confirmed to be released on February 12, 2027 in three different editions and a 48-hour early access pre-order bonus.
