NetherRealm Studios Chief Creative Officer Ed Boon has officially responded to a recent wave of rumors surrounding Injustice 3, shutting down specific claims about ongoing playtests while leaving the door open for the project’s actual development.
The speculation reached a fever pitch following a series of online claims, including a rumor that NetherRealm was partnering with Insomniac Games on a joint fighting project, as well as reports of external playtesting for Injustice 3, Mortal Kombat 13, and a Mortal Kombat 9 remaster. Boon quickly dismissed the Insomniac rumor as “100% false” and subsequently clarified that none of the mentioned titles are currently undergo active external playtesting.
However, Boon added a subtle nuance to his clarification that caught the attention of the fighting game community. Responding to fans on social media, he noted that “just because a game isn’t currently being tested externally doesn’t necessarily mean the game isn’t in development.” The remark suggests that while recent leaks regarding public or third-party playtesting are inaccurate, NetherRealm may still be quietly working on a new entry behind closed doors.
The Injustice franchise has remained dormant since the release of Injustice 2 in May 2017. While NetherRealm has focused heavily on the Mortal Kombat series in recent years, recent job listings and resume updates from industry contractors have continually fueled expectations for a return to the DC Comics universe. For now, players will have to wait for an official announcement from Warner Bros. Games before expecting any concrete details regarding NetherRealm’s next title.
