GTA 6 Running at 60 FPS on Consoles is Unlikely, and “Genuinely Challenging” even on PC, Tech Experts Say

While the collective gaming community is still processing the sheer awe and excitement of the Netflix showcase of GTA 6 that took place yesterday, what felt a little bit less exciting was the 30 FPS experience of the game on the base PS5. However, according to Tech Experts of Digital Foundry, we’re unlikely to ever see GTA 6 on a higher framerate than 30 on all current-gen consoles, cause of the impossible levels of visual fidelity and realism that Rockstar has managed to get out of the consoles which have clearly pushed them to their absolute limits.

“It’s clear that the focus was absolutely maximizing the level of visual detail at a fixed 30fps frame-rate on all platforms,” Digital Foundry wrote in a deep dive article regarding yesterday’s GTA 6 showcase. “The rendering, simulation and presentation have all been tuned around that constraint – and the result is an unprecedented level of density, material quality and world coherence, with trade-offs landing primarily in image quality and animation smoothness rather than systemic scale or fidelity.”

According to Digital Foundry, Rockstar appears to be targeting to maximize the sheer detail in every single one of those 30 frames instead of toning down the visuals in favor of a higher framerate. They offered more insights on why achieving a 60 FPS experience is simply impossible on the current-gen consoles, for multiple reasons.

“The evidence suggests that the game maintains its 33.3ms cadence with care, and Rockstar has clearly spent immense effort balancing CPU and GPU workloads to fully saturate the hardware,” Digital Foundry continued. “That makes a 60fps version extremely unlikely on console hardware – there’s no way to regain enough GPU and particularly CPU time to make a 16.7ms update rate work without compromising the world.”

The experts also revealed an important reason why GTA 6 could prove to be extremely challenging to run at a smooth 60 FPS on the PC too, cause of the sheer overhead on the CPU for rendering the busy and alive world of Leonida.

“The PC platform ought to allow for higher resolutions, especially with the benefit of more modern temporal upscalers like DLSS, alongside increased RT sample counts, longer draw distances and so on. However, the CPU demands of a world this complex – tuned around console Zen 2 cores at 30fps – could make hitting 60fps genuinely challenging in a way we don’t often see, and will likely require a high-end CPU like a recent Ryzen X3D to avoid bottlenecks.”

GTA 6 is currently slated to launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026.
