Xbox CEO Asha Sharma Outlines Strategy to Reverse Revenue Slump

In an internal memo obtained by The Verge, newly appointed Xbox CEO Asha Sharma laid out a multi-year recovery strategy centered on four main priorities aimed at restoring profitability following months of executive departures and severe workforce reductions. The internal communication details a framework dubbed the “Four C’s,” establishing an operational roadmap designed to bring Microsoft’s gaming margins back in line with broader industry averages by the conclusion of fiscal year 2027.

The turnaround plan breaks down into four targeted operational pillars: Core, Content, Creation, and Connection. Under the Core initiative, Xbox intends to reinforce its traditional platform infrastructure with dedicated focus on hardware. The Content pillar focuses on expanding established titles into global media franchises, while Creation prioritizes turning Minecraft into a universal platform for user-generated content. Lastly, Connection focuses on deepening community engagement across existing game worlds.

This strategic recalibration follows a turbulent corporate period. Following high-profile executive exits earlier in the year, Sharma assumed control alongside new leadership heavily drawn from Microsoft’s artificial intelligence teams. Shortly after taking office, Sharma announced that over 3,000 staff members would be laid off by the end of fiscal year 2027. While Xbox currently reports roughly 100 million daily active users and expanded its total audience by more than 200 million players over the past year, Microsoft’s latest earnings demonstrated a marked year-over-year decline in revenue, exposing a growing disconnect between player acquisition and financial returns.

Sharma’s blueprint lays out a three-stage timeline extending through 2030. The primary phase targets a complete return to revenue growth by June 2027, followed by accelerated growth through fiscal years 2028 and 2029. By 2030, Xbox aims to sustain double-digit growth while reaching 500 million daily active users—halfway toward its ultimate target of one billion daily players.
