id Software is destroyed by massive Xbox layoffs in 2026

id Software

id Software is pretty much a shell of a company now, and this is all thanks to Microsoft shaking up Xbox to its core. This is a terrible era to live in for game developers, because job security isn’t guaranteed, not to mention that game quality will clearly just go down the drain with this. Not only is it a bad period to work on the field, but it is also a terrible period to be a gamer too, the fact that some are willing to put up with outrageous prices for less game is just something insane. Thankfully, games have existed for more than 50 years now, there’s some insane backlog to tackle.

id Software might die

Considering that allegedly, all programmers have been removed from id Software, then that means Microsoft might be planning something, something that will fail terribly of course. It is miserable that none of the people involved in id Software might be able to find a good place to work considering how the whole industry is going. The only possible choice they have is trying to do something together and attempt to go independent. Considering the market is oversaturated with games however, unless they do some big marketing stunts they will have a hard time.

id Software has been one of the most important companies ever, they pretty much created the boom of first person shooters with DOOM, not to mention one of the most important methods on how 3D graphics work too. It is insane how things change in the industry, what were once seen as heroes are now people that get cast away, a mere casualty of the ruthless layoffs of the system we live in. It almost makes you feel like supporting Microsoft instead of those who worked for id Software is just working against humanity’s interests in a way.
