Bungie has announced that Marathon will receive a new limited-time cooperative PvE mode called Vault Breaker on July 21 as part of the game’s upcoming Mid-Season 2 update. This newly revealed activity will remain active for a brief two-week window, officially concluding on August 4. While the developer previously experimented with environmental hazards and artificial intelligence targets in the “Sponsored Survival” mode earlier this season, Vault Breaker marks a distinct shift by offering a pure cooperative environment that completely removes opposing player threats from the matchmaking pool.
Teams participating in the mode will deploy to the challenging Cryo Archives map with the singular objective of infiltrating a secure vault, collecting the valuable assets secured inside, and fighting their way to a successful extraction point. The activity utilizes a distinct roguelite structure. Upon completing an initial run, squads can choose to undertake progressively more difficult versions of the vault mission, with the escalating combat danger directly translating to rarer and more substantial rewards for survival.
To preserve the balance of this specific challenge, players will not be permitted to use their own customized gear sets within the mode. Participants must instead rely on a specialized Vault Breaker Sponsored Kit provided in the main menu’s event tab. While this kit initially limits players to a single baseline weapon and minimal utility items, it can be continuously enhanced by earning a seasonal currency called Vault Data. This currency can either be invested directly back into the event kit for better survivability or spent on permanent hardware for the game’s core competitive modes. Bungie has cautioned that Vault Data will expire immediately when the event concludes, urging players to clear their inventories before the August deadline.
The update also introduces four event-specific Codex Challenges, tasking players with completing various vault missions to unlock exclusive cosmetics like the Circuit Breaker weapon style, a weapon charm, and unique profile banners. Beyond the PvE addition, the mid-season patch introduces crucial sandbox balancing across the broader game. Players can expect a notable performance buff for the WSTR shotgun, balanced by a direct reduction to the overall combat effectiveness of the dominant D54 Battle Pistol.
