It seems Remedy’s upcoming Control Resnonant will have the deepest and most varied gameplay in the series as according to the Art Director for Control Resonant Elmeri Raitanen, the third person action adventure title can attract the huge action RPG crowd of players which it’s predecessor hadn’t been able to. As the incoming title offers much more of a straight up and exciting combat experience with new protagonist Dylan who’s essentially a ‘brawler who gets up close and personal,’ compared to Control’s protagonist Jesse who had a more ranged gameplay mechanics with telekinetic powers, the upcoming title could certainly have a much wider appeal.
Raitanen says that players who prefer action RPGs didn’t give Control a chance which is a ‘massive player base who might have enjoyed Control if it was a little more in their wheelhouse’, something that the devs are hoping Resonant succeeds at as it could really ‘attract a little more of that action RPG crowd’. Also, he says that despite having a much different gameplay mechanics, fans of the first Control which came out in 2019, wouldn’t feel alienated by Resonant, that means in terms of narrative threads, both titles are pretty consistent:
“We have been thinking about it, of course. I could still say that, regardless of the many things that we have changed, there is still a strong undercurrent of the original vibes of Control in this one as well.”
He also confirmed that just like Remedy’s Alan Wake 2, the upcoming Control Resonant will have custom-made, bespoke music that will add more depth and weight to many crucial story sections in ways that licensed tracks just can’t:
“[Licensed tracks] might have completely different baggage coming with that song, so now we know that nobody could have had any prior experiences with this song.
Years later, if they hear this song, they will know that it’s from this [moment in the game]”.
Control Resonant is set to release on on September 24, 2026 for the Playstation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows and macOS.
