In a shocking and alarming news from Xbox, it’s claimed that Ninja Theory, the studio behind the acclaimed Hellblade titles, is getting closed down as the platform is currently going through a massive restructuring process which can also result in potential closures of multiple studios such as Double Fine, Compulsion Games and more. What’s even more concerning and unfair is that it’s only been a few days after Ninja Theory had announced a new game titled ‘Senua’ in the recent Xbox Showcase event, which could now put all of it’s further development into a great degree of uncertainty.
According to a new report from The Verge, Ninja Theory is currently under the crosshairs for Xbox’s massive cost-reducing measures which can result in imminent closure of the studio. The report states that the employees were informed about the decision on Monday but there’s currently still hope of Ninja Theory finding a buyer before the closure happens.
It’s revealed earlier that Compulsion Games, the developer behind South of Midnight along with Double Fine who are the creators of titles such as Kiln, Massive Chalice, Keeper, Psychonauts, Brutal Legend, and several others, could get closed down as a result of Xbox’s current restructuring process.
These reports of impending layoffs and closures come shortly after new CEO Asha Sharma sending an email titled Next 100 Days: Xbox Reset to all employees, notifying them of the incoming massive job cuts to be held across multiple studios, after the company has gone through several underperforming years, mainly due to the current hardware component crisis. However, it’s certainly disappointing that whenever there’s any large scale restructuring in companies like Microsoft, it’s always the employees who end up paying for it in the form of job cuts and layoffs.
Ninja Theory has had multiple acclaimed titles over the years, chief among them is Hellblade 2 which earned several nominations at the 2025 BAFTA Games Awards event.
