Kadokawa has unveiled the third official trailer for Sekiro: No Defeat, the upcoming anime adaptation of FromSoftware’s critically acclaimed 2019 action game. The project is locked in for a September 4 release in Japan, beginning with an exclusive three-week theatrical run before heading west. North American audiences will be able to stream the series on Crunchyroll at a later, yet-to-be-announced date.
Produced by studio Qzil.la, the adaptation is helmed by director Kenichi Kutsuna, a veteran animator recognized for his work on prominent series like Bleach and Naruto: Shippuden. Takuya Sato handles the script, which aims to translate the game’s intricate Sengoku-era lore into a cohesive narrative structure. Rather than spinning off into an original tale, the production closely mirrors the source material, centering on Kuro, the Divine Heir, and his fiercely loyal protector, the shinobi known as Wolf.
The latest one-minute teaser highlights a noticeable shift in tone compared to the darker, psychological imagery shown in the March teaser. This footage places a heavy emphasis on the foundational bond between the two leads, showcasing lighter, more human interactions alongside Kuro’s struggle to even lift the massive Mortal Blade from Wolf’s back. However, the trailer ensures that the game’s signature tense atmosphere remains fully intact, hinting at a narrative that may explore the story’s darker thematic undercurrents even more deeply than the interactive version did.
Action remains a core pillar of the adaptation, as the second half of the montage features rapid glimpses of pivotal battles. Fans will immediately recognize Genichiro Ashina utilizing his signature Way of Tomoe lightning strikes, alongside brief appearances by the spear-wielding boss Gyoubu Oniwa on horseback and the warrior monk sects of the Senpou Temple. The voice cast brings back familiar heavy hitters, with Daisuke Namikawa voicing Wolf, Miyuki Satou as Kuro, and Kenjiro Tsuda returning to portray Genichiro, ensuring continuity for long-time players of the original game.
