The recently released 007 First Light by IO Interactive is already a hit and perhaps the best Bond title ever made, which also makes the possibility of sequels or follow up titles almost an inevitability at this point. However, those games won’t be published by IO Interactive and instead by Amazon and MGM, as stated by Jeff Gattis, GM of gaming at Amazon. In a new interview with Polygon, the GM said:
“We did not [make First Light],” Gattis explained. “We do have a stake in it because we now own the IP, but that IP acquisition happened after the First Light IO deal was already done.”
While both Amazon and MGM still collaborated on 007 First Light in order to make sure the resulting game will be of the same standard that was expected from the James Bond brand, the sequels will see the companies having far more control than what they currently have. According to Gattis, all future Bond titles made by IO Interactive will be “done by MGM and, theoretically, by Amazon Game Studios.”
Also, as he stated, Amazon will look to create a sort of synergy between videogames with films and TV shows for their IPs, which will certainly be quite new and interesting, at least.
“We think that’s a real opportunity for us to create IP that extends — or kind of expands upon — TV shows and movies. So there’ll be a Tomb Raider TV show on Prime Video that’ll go alongside the games. There’s a lot of things we have in the works on new games that’ll relate to Prime Video IP.”
007 First Light came out on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC on 27th May and swiftly became the highest rated James Bond title in the last 15 years, or even more. With a highly impressive 87 Metacritic score, developer IO Interactive’s 007 First Light shines vividly and is certainly the best Bond game in several decades.
