In a shockingly pleasant news, developer CD Projeckt RED has confirmed that their seminal open world RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt which came out way back in 2015, is about to receive a surprise new DLC named Songs of the Past sometimes in next year. This announcement has also set a precedent for a game that originally came out over a decade ago, to get whole new contents designed to add more life into it in many ways.
Set to be released in 2027, the surprise third DLC also comes out a total of 11 years after the second piece of expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt named Blood and Wine, which came out back in 2016. While the first expansion of Witcher 3, titled Hearts of Stone, was released in October 2015, the same year the game came out.
In an official press release, developer CD Projekt RED has stated that the new DLC is being developed in collaboration with Fool’s Theory, a studio made of several “industry veterans” who had worked on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It was also revealed that the DLC will arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC and sees the players take “the role of legendary monster slayer Geralt of Rivia for a brand new adventure”.
As we already know by now, the next mainline entry in the series is The Witcher 4 which features Ciri as a new monster hunter, a sharp departure from the past three titles where it was Geralt who was the main protagonist. It’s possible that the upcoming DLC is a way for the devs to bridge the narrative gap between The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Witcher 4, focusing on Ciri’s journey to become a full fledged monster hunter from being more of a side character in the last game.
In other news of the venerable RPG series, it’s been confirmed that The Witcher 4 will be part of a whole new trilogy that will be released in a span of 6 years.
