Naughty Dog’s upcoming sci-fi adventure, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet , may be much further away than eager fans initially hoped. During a recent podcast appearance, cast member Kumail Nanjiani indicated that a major gaming project he recently worked on is still “a couple years” from release. Given that Intergalactic is Nanjiani’s most prominent and recently revealed video game project, industry analysts and fans are pointing to a potential 2028 launch window for the highly anticipated PlayStation exclusive.
The studio officially revealed the game with a cinematic trailer at the 2024 Game Awards, marking Naughty Dog’s first major project announcement since the launch of The Last of Us Part II in 2020. While the initial reveal sparked speculation about a potential 2026 or 2027 release window, Nanjiani’s comments suggest the developer requires significant time to polish the ambitious new intellectual property.
Beyond timeline speculation, other members of the cast have begun dropping hints regarding the game’s creative direction. Actor Tati Gabrielle, who portrays the lead character Jordan, recently noted in a promotional interview for the Mortal Kombat movie that Intergalactic represents a distinct departure from Naughty Dog’s established formula. This aligns with earlier reports suggesting that game director Neil Druckmann has drawn inspiration from the non-linear exploration mechanics popularized by FromSoftware’s Elden Ring.
A shift toward open-ended exploration would mark a massive evolution for a studio primarily celebrated for its tightly structured, linear narrative experiences like Uncharted and The Last of Us. However, as modern game development cycles continue to stretch past the five-year mark, a prolonged production timeline until 2028 would give Naughty Dog the necessary runway to overhaul its traditional design philosophy. Sony and Naughty Dog have yet to comment officially on the release window, leaving fans to look toward upcoming industry events like the Summer Game Fest for concrete updates.
