Valve keeps making strives towards the open source community, and the latest hardware survey reveals that there’s a ton of progress for Linux in the market. It is true that the Steam Deck has boosted the numbers of people using Linux and that getting registered in the survey itself, but there’s also a ton of people veering towards using Linux more on their personal computers due to the failure of Microsoft to provide something stable that works. As Microsoft keeps blundering with their nonsense of agentic OSes, whatever that means, Valve keeps winning by giving people power.
Valve sides with Linux
Valve has always been quite the open source nerd themselves, so it was obvious that they would eventually favor an open source operating system that gives freedom to users. Steam OS is definitely leaning towards that, but you can already try out the power it offers by using any other Linux distribution since they are pretty much the same. However people still keep waiting for that OS as if it were to magically solve any problem that they can’t solve now by just installing Arch Linux or CachyOS on their PCs.
The hardware market is in a very messy state thanks to “AI”, but the bubble keeps expanding further giving more signs of an upcoming deafening burst that will rock the entire economy of the world. RAM is prohibitive and GPUs are set to skyrocket to prices unseen by anyone before, the only thing we have to do is trust that Valve will price their stuff in an affordable way. If Valve wishes to dominate the entirety of the PC market, the only thing they have to do is undercut the competition. While the 3% of increase in Linux market share might be small, these things tend to snowball very quick before people even realize, so get ready.
