Arrowhead Confirms Next Title Will Carry Helldivers 2’s 'DNA'

Arrowhead Game Studios, the team behind the successful Helldivers 2, has shared details about its next project. At a recent industry event, Johan Pilestedt, the studio’s Chief Creative Officer – In an interview with Games Radar, confirmed that the upcoming title will continue the legacy of their surprise hit from 2024. This promises fans a familiar foundation for the studio’s future work.

Pilestedt stated that the new game would not stray “too far off” from the successful formula of Helldivers 2. This decision shows that the developer wants to build on the co-operative, action-focused experience that resonated with millions of players worldwide. For fans, this means a familiar design philosophy and core gameplay will likely be central to the new title. Helldivers 2 marked a significant change in genre for the franchise, shifting from a top-down shooter to a third-person perspective. Keeping its “DNA” makes sense after such great success.

However, players should manage their expectations regarding a quick release. The CCO noted that the project is still in the early stages of development. Pilestedt described this early period as his favorite part of the process. It involves building a team, breaking down barriers, and defining the kind of game they want to create. This focus on crafting a strong internal vision indicates a long-term commitment to quality over rushing to release.

While there is speculation about a direct sequel, Helldivers 3, the studio has indicated a preference for evolving the current game through ongoing support. This effectively turns Helldivers 2 into a lasting experience. By concentrating on a brand new title that captures the original’s spirit rather than its number, Arrowhead is aiming to expand its creative reach. This strategy allows the team to use their established design strengths while avoiding the label of being just the ‘Helldivers studio,’ creating a chance to develop a unique yet recognizable new property.
