Mexico will impose a tax that will hurt consumers and producers alike. PC gamers in Mexico are unaware of what’s coming to them, and this could expand to other regions of the world. The war against video games and other media is raging back similar to what happened in the 1980s, religious organizations and political groups are out there trying to silence the expression and voices of people. They are also fighting against the right to free speech, which they ironically hold so dearly and will use whenever they see something they don’t like. This people think that video games can turn you violent, for real.
Mexico is committing a huge blunder
In an attempt to end their problems with gang violence, it seems that restricting games in some shape or form is their next step, a rather ludicrous one. Stop Censoring Games is a campaign that is trying to prevent this from being a thing, however, we will have to fight this fight harder worldwide if we want to ensure things can be free on the medium. Expression is at risk and seemingly powerful forces are attempting to silence all of us, because what they consider violent will be as simple as just stomping on a Goomba.
This is a slippery slope, if one wants to make a game about an important societal topic that deals with violence, then they will get silenced too. Every game has some violent element to it whether we like it or not, and whether it is fantasy violence or not. Regulations like this will make all games become more expensive for gamers and this will cause developers to lose on potential customers on Mexico. The Mexican people should be protesting about this, as it is the first sign of something that will explode into a worldwide race to tax content deemed violent.
