Enthusiasts looking to get their hands on Nintendo’s recently launched Switch 2 might be in for a tough ride, as a leading Japanese news agency, citing fiscal analysts, estimates limited supply going well into Spring 2026, as reported by Nikkei Asia. Less than a month since the June 5, 2025 launch, the console has already seen a global mania with demand far exceeding current capacity for production. This added popularity puts the Switch 2 in a prime position to break new sales records for Nintendo, and possibly even for the gaming industry as a whole, if production ultimately proves able to meet consumers’ aggressive enthusiasm.
The severe shortage in Japan has forced sellers to adopt “first-come, first-served” models, and Nintendo’s official online store was forced to resort to random lotteries to deal with the floods of demand from millions of prospective buyers. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has publicly admitted and apologized for such shortages, which are largely due to a critical shortage of critical semiconductors—a common gripe in the technology sector in recent years.
Even as Nintendo attempts to navigate around such production hiccups, near-term availability is cast a long shadow by market analysts’ projections. Hideki Yasuda of Toyo Securities and Zhai Yijia of UBS Securities both estimate healthy opening-month sales of more than six million units globally in June 2025. Though official statements are pending for Nintendo on August 1, these analysts also expect sales of 18 to 20 million consoles by the end of the current fiscal year. MST Financial analyst David Gibson’s more modest estimate puts June sales at 5.4 million units.
Fueling the suspense, previous indications by President Furukawa signaled the likelihood of future price changes on the Switch 2 for some markets. Previous pre-order release date postponements for the United States and Canadian markets owing to changing tariff policies are giving weight to global economic forces that continue to drive the direction of the console. With supply remaining limited and demand still in the stratosphere, patience will clearly be the virtue of choice for those holding out for a Nintendo Switch 2.
