Epic Games, the maker of world popular battle royale game Fortnite, is making a new move that brings South Korean football superstar Son Heung-min into the game as a playable skin. It is on 21st June, Fortnite’s new big move as the game continues to bring world pop culture icons into the game and further expand the game and penetrate more audience.
Tottenham Hotspur and South Korea national team captain Son Heung-min, and fame forward, is well regarded throughout the world for his outstanding ability and sporting integrity. His addition to the extensive list of fame couples in Fortnite is a credit to the company’s commitment to reflecting today-day-to-day culture icons. This partnership comes on the heels of earlier successful partnerships with soccer icons Neymar Jr and Lionel Messi in making Fortnite a destination site where virtual gaming intersects with real-life celebrities.
“This collaboration is a mashup to reaffirm Fortnite’s roots in the Korean market,” explained Park Sung-chul, Epic Games Korea CEO. By including such ubiquitous local names in the abundance of pop culture throughout the region, Epic Games is attempting to appeal directly to regional gamers, as well as further open up the game itself for deeper incursion. The following pack with Son Heung-min’s face will also include not only his face as a skin but also an exclusive emote, although prices for the above cosmetic items are still not revealed.
This comes after Fortnite’s recent Chapter 6 Season 3, where there was a legendary pass with characters Superman and Robin. The Superman skin based on how he appears in the new James Gunn film hits stores on July 11 but can be unlocked earlier by buying a Battle Bundle. Otherwise, Epic Games has also dropped a teaser on possible crossover with the extremely popular “Squid Game” series, which will be a healthy content pipeline. Rumor also points to crossovers with cartoon Fox properties such as King of the Hill, Bob’s Burgers, and Family Guy, with some leakers even stating June 13 as a release day for those bundles. Such frequent content additions give a sheen and wide scope in the future to Fortnite, maintaining its enormous player base in ongoing interest.
