Overwatch 2 Developer's Take Teases Major Changes

Overwatch 2 Director Teases Major Changes for 2025

Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller has hinted at big changes coming to the game in 2025, including ranked play adjustments, new weapon variants, and updates to Competitive mode. These details were revealed in Blizzard’s latest Director’s Take, which outlines how the team is shaping future seasons based on community feedback.

Competitive Mode Getting Major Tweaks in Season 15

Keller reflected on the state of Overwatch 2’s Competitive mode, acknowledging that the Champion rank was more difficult to reach than intended. As a result, adjustments are expected in Season 15, which launches on February 18. Additionally, Blizzard confirmed that new systems for Competitive play will be announced in the coming weeks, suggesting broader changes on the horizon.

Meanwhile, Clash mode is being removed from Competitive play due to balance concerns, though it will still be available in Quick Play.

New Weapon Variants Coming

One of the most exciting teasers from Keller’s post is the introduction of new weapon variants. The Jade variants will be vaulted, and they’ll be replaced with a new, space-themed design, hinted at as being “out of this world.”

More Updates Expected Soon

With Overwatch 2 continuing its seasonal update model, Blizzard is listening closely to player feedback and making changes accordingly. While no new hero has been confirmed for Season 15, Keller mentioned that the next hero in development has mobility similar to recent 2024 releases.

As the February 18 launch of Season 15 approaches, fans can expect more announcements soon, detailing how Overwatch 2 will evolve throughout the year. While Overwatch 2 has been faced with a widespread backlash severally, with the most recent being the DJ Lucio Skin controversy which was later resolved, the title has endured it all offering quick feedback and response to its player base, and resolving issues faced by players almost instantly.

Many of Overwatch 2’s fan base have chosen to slide over to the recently released Marvel Rivals, but those contemplating whether to remain with Overwatch 2 would have an even stronger resolve to stay following the game’s upcoming major changes.
