Nintendo has issued a warning to Wii U users, advising them to avoid unauthorized services that replicate the console’s discontinued online features. The Japanese branch of Nintendo made this statement via a post on its official X account, emphasizing potential security risks associated with these third-party networks.
Following the shutdown of online services for the Wii U and 3DS in 2024, fan-made networks like Pretendo have emerged, allowing users to bypass the official shutdown and continue enjoying features such as online play. Some of these networks even operate without requiring users to modify their systems, raising concerns from Nintendo.
A Fond Farewell to the Wii U’s Legacy
The Wii U, released in 2012 as Nintendo’s eighth-generation console, was the company’s first hardware to support HD graphics. Despite its modest commercial success, the console remains a beloved part of Nintendo’s history, thanks to its innovative GamePad and titles like Splatoon and Mario Kart 8. With services officially discontinued, dedicated players have found ways to continue their online adventures, even as Nintendo reiterates concerns about the safety of unauthorized solutions.
Interestingly, four Wii U players were still spotted online 40 days after servers shut down, showcasing the community’s devotion. In response to Nintendo’s recent caution, some players humorously dismissed the risks, vowing to keep playing games like Splatoon on these unofficial networks. Others redirected their requests to Nintendo, urging the company to introduce features from the Wii U and 3DS era—like the social-focused Miiverse—on the highly anticipated Switch 2.
The Japanese statement shared on X read:
“We are aware of unauthorized services that attempt to replicate features previously available on the Wii U, such as online play. Please refrain from using such services, as they may pose unexpected security risks. We appreciate your understanding.”
As excitement builds for the successor to the Switch, fans hope Nintendo learns from the Wii U’s innovative social features while steering clear of its challenges.
