Fortune’s Run Development Paused as Creator Faces Prison Sentence

The development of the Steam early-access FPS Fortune’s Run has been abruptly halted after its creator, Dizzie, announced they have been sentenced to three years in prison. This unique situation has left fans uncertain about the game’s future, though Dizzie has expressed commitment to completing the project after serving their sentence.

Dizzie shared the news in a Steam update on January 14, stating that their sentence, beginning in February 2025, will halt all development. The developer explained the charge stemmed from events before the creation of Fortune’s Run, during what they described as a “violent” period in their life. While specifics of the crime were not disclosed, Dizzie expressed regret for their past actions.

Prior to this announcement, Fortune’s Run had gained traction in the indie gaming community, earning a “Very Positive” rating on Steam. Players lauded its retro-inspired visuals and engaging gameplay. The game was expected to exit early access by 2026, but this timeline now appears unfeasible.

Initially developed by a two-person team, Fortune’s Run became a solo effort after Dizzie’s collaborator left the project following a medical recovery. With no team to continue updates, the game is effectively in limbo until Dizzie’s release. While delays are common in indie development, pausing due to the creator’s imprisonment is an unusual twist.

Despite the pause, fans remain hopeful. Dizzie emphasized their determination to complete the game after serving their sentence. In the meantime, Fortune’s Run remains available in its current state, allowing players to enjoy what has been developed so far.

The situation mirrors other indie projects that have faced prolonged delays but ultimately succeeded. With a dedicated fanbase and positive reception, there is optimism that Fortune’s Run will eventually overcome this challenge. That said, whether or not the title makes it to the spotlight after its launch, Fortune’s Run would forever engrave an unforgettable experience in the hearts of players.
