In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Dragon Age: The Veilguard creative director John Epler shared his thoughts on the future of the gaming industry. Epler noted that there will come a point when improving graphics further won’t be possible, saying, “At a certain point, we come to the place where we can’t make graphics better.”
Instead of focusing solely on visual enhancements, developers will need to shift their attention toward offering players greater freedom. Epler emphasized, “It’s going to be about finding that balance between player freedom and authored content.” He views this as the next major challenge for game creators, highlighting the need to craft immersive worlds where players feel both guided and empowered.
Epler also touched on how advancements in technology could make this task easier in the future. He hopes that in 25 years, developers will have access to resources that allow for more branching narratives, without sacrificing the human touch that is often lost with procedural content.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is set to release on October 31, 2024.
