Starter Tips for Playing Shin Megami Tensei V

Shin Megami Tensei V is one of the most anticipated JRPG to hit Switch and for eager fans excited to play when it launches later this week, you will be in for a long ride as the game is quite substantial.

For newcomers or fans of Persona may feel a little bit overwhelmed by the mechanics and pacing. If you are one of those people, we are here to guide you through Shin Megami Tensei V.

Without further ado, here are our starter tips for playing Shin Megami Tensei V for Switch:

Explore the World

There’s a lot to see and uncover whether you find yourself in the Netherworld or real-world Tokyo. It is highly recommended to search every corner to find items that might be useful later on your journey. You may find that rare item that you can sell for a lot of Macca or a demon lurking at a specific spot that you can recruit.

Find out the demon’s weakness

In combat, it is important that you find the weakness of the demon you’re fighting. Using their weakness against them will give you an extra turn that will be very beneficial. If possible, stock up some Spyglass items to see their weakness.

Save Often

Demon encounters can be tough and there are times you may find a demon that overwhelms your team. If that happens, there’s a chance you might lose, leading to Game Over. Whenever you see a save point, use it as much as possible, especially if you’re going into uncharted waters. You don’t want to lose hours of progress just because you made a poor move. Remember, difficulty spikes are common in Shin Megami Tensei games.

Search for Relics

Relics in Shin Megami Tensei games are remnants from the real world that sell for a lot of Macca in Cadaver’s Hollow. If you see a vending machine on the map that is glowing, make sure that you get that Relic and sell it!

Grind for Levels

It’s important that your level isn’t far behind the area you’re in. If you find yourself under-leveled, take the time to grind. The higher level you’re, the more powerful demons you can recruit.

Do Sidequests

As you explore the world, there are sidequests that give experience points and sometimes an opportunity to acquire a powerful demon. If you see the sidequest icon on the map, make sure you spend the time to do it.

Expand Demon Storage

As soon as you are able to collect Glory and spend them in the World of Shadows, make sure you purchase the modifier that allows you to increase demon storage. The more demons that you can collect, the more fusions you can perform. It’s important that you have a variety of demons in your party that can tackle different elemental weaknesses.
