Bungie Confirms Seasonal Progress Wipes for Marathon Following Successful Server Slam

Bungie has officially confirmed that its upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon, will implement mandatory player progress wipes at the start of every new content season. The decision marks a significant shift for the studio, which has traditionally prioritized long-term character persistence in the Destiny franchise. By resetting gear and rankings periodically, the developer aims to maintain a level playing field and prevent the power creep that often plagues live-service titles. While this mechanic is a staple of the extraction genre, its forced nature in Marathon stands in contrast to competitors like Arc Raiders, which offers resets as an optional experience.

The announcement comes on the heels of a highly successful “server slam” event that concluded on March 2. According to SteamDB, the trial period saw a peak of 143,621 concurrent players on Steam alone, signaling massive public interest ahead of the game’s full launch. This technical test allowed the community to experience the core gameplay loop, mobility, and gunplay—areas where Bungie has historically excelled—while giving the engineering team a chance to stress-test the infrastructure before the global rollout.

Despite the impressive player numbers, the community’s reception remains a mixture of praise and caution. Early feedback from the server slam highlights a steep learning curve and a user interface that some players found unnecessarily complex. Furthermore, reports of sparse player-versus-player encounters have led to discussions regarding the game’s pacing and map density. As Bungie prepares for the final release, the studio will need to address these “kinks” to ensure that the transition from the polished Destiny ecosystem to the high-stakes world of extraction shooters is seamless for its veteran fanbase.

Marathon is scheduled for a full release on March 5, appearing on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This launch represents a pivotal moment for Bungie as it attempts to redefine itself outside of the Halo and Destiny legacies. Whether the implementation of seasonal wipes will foster a healthy competitive environment or alienate players looking for permanent progression remains to be seen, but the initial engagement metrics suggest that the gaming world is more than ready to find out.
