Developer IO Interactive’s upcoming 007: First Flight will have it’s fair share of melee combat and it’s going to take a page from both Batman: Arkham and the Uncharted series of games to build it’s own flavor of fisticuffs. The studio is aiming to create a combat system that’s fast, fluid and cinematic and brings several elements from one of the greatest action titles in gaming history which is the Arkham trilogy with it’s freeflow combat system. In a recent interview with Game Informer, 007: First Light gameplay director Andreas Krogh shared insights on the melee combat in their upcoming title:
“What are our references here? What are the other games that do this well, on the same scale and the same kind of scope as this game? Obviously, we have some references there in the approach to close combat.”
“I think you see the Arkham games, you see those games in it. You also see some modern takes on destructibility in the environment that are not necessarily from the Arkham games, but newer takes like Uncharted. We have a deeper system than that because we want to do more of it, and from shooting, you see references that are also from modern games.”
One of the reasons why the Arkham games are considered modern classics is the combat system that lets you perform complex and intricate moves with a easy-to-grasp-hard-to-master system which is easily one of the greatest gameplay mechanics of all time, period.
Besides the combat, First Light will also allow players multiple paths based on their choice of playstyle: “We want to set the player up to choose for himself. What kind of player are you? What kind of playstyle do you prefer? Play that way.”
Also, check out the game’s final PC System Requirements to get a clear idea on how the upcoming title will look and run on your system. The visuals look pretty crisp, detailed and hopefully be optimized to run well enough on most systems out there.
007: First Light will launch across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC on March 27, 2026. You can start pre-ordering your copy of 007: First Light right now to get a free upgrade to the Deluxe Edition.
