Looks like the newly released God of War: Sons of Sparta is having a hard time living up to the God-tier pedigree of the franchise as the 2D side scroller is currently rated at 69 based on critic reviews and a measly 6.6 score based on user reviews on Metacritic which officially makes it the lowest rated game in the entire franchise. In fact, the divisive God of War: Ascension which was previously the worst rated game in the series, still managed to garner a high rating of 80 and in fact both PSP titles, which are terrific in every way, are considerably higher rated than Sons of Sparta.
Of course it’d be quite unfair to compare Sons of Sparta to the other mainline God of War games but the series has so far maintained a consistent level of flair across different platforms and generations and from that perspective, it’s certainly a bit sad to see the latest title missing the mark entirely. On the other hand, God of War: Chains of Olympus which came out for the PSP maybe more than a decade ago, already showcased a pre-God Kratos and to great effect which kind of makes Sons of Sparta a bit redundant in that sense.
Also, Sons of Sparta has been slammed recently by the original creator of the God of War franchise David Jaffe where he said: “This is the kind of game I’ve always wanted in terms of 2.5D God of War, super into it — but this, to me, is not what I was talking about. I bought this game, it’s a $30 game, I don’t like it, I don’t recommend it,” and later declaring “If you pulled God of War out of it, and you just said, ‘hey, we’re making a game about this kid,’ most people would say ‘that doesn’t sound like a very compelling idea for a video game character,’ because it’s not.”
In other news of the iconic series, a Remake of the older, hack-n-slash based God of War trilogy has been announced during the recent State of Play event.
