Despite being part of one of the biggest videogame franchises of all time, the recently released Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 hasn’t had the best launch that publisher Activision may have hoped for, with several aspects of the game coming under heavy criticism including it’s single player co-op campaign that doesn’t feature checkpoints and won’t let you pause either and the use of generative AI in multiple in-game artworks and images.
Now to add to the list of woes that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is facing right now, the first person shooter isn’t faring particularly well on Metacritic either as it just got the lowest ever rating in the entire franchise.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 currently holds an 84 critic score with 16 reviews on Metacritic but the user rating, as of this writing, is a shockingly low 1.6 out of 10. To put that into perspective, 2023’s Modern Warfare 3 which is widely considered as one of the lowest rated Call of Duty titles ever with a critic score of 56, still sports a higher user rating of 2.3. And while the rating can still change in the upcoming weeks, but still it’s not a good look for the franchise that’s considered to be the biggest in the first person shooter genre of games.
Another sore phase that Black Ops 7 is going through right now is it’s sub-par player counts on Steam which are considerably lower than it’s arch rival Battlefield 6 and even the recent ARC Raiders with both getting well over 200k players on a regular basis while Activision’s latest entry hasn’t even reached 100k players yet.
And while these ratings and numbers won’t necessarily put any dent in the overall sales for the Call of Duty juggernaut, but still they challenge the franchise’s perception as the industry leader in terms of crafting the most engaging first person shooter experience which, if the devs don’t do much to change in time, can go a long way to stain the series’ overall reputation.
