Marvel’s Wolverine finally gets it’s much anticipated first trailer during Sony’s latest State of Play, giving us a spectacular glimpse of Insomniac’s upcoming title based on the iconic character. So if you haven’t watched the Wolverine trailer yet, do so right now, cause it’s worth every second of it’s runtime.
And right from the get-go, the trailer makes it absolutely clear that developer Insomniac’s take on Wolverine totally lives up to all the eccentricities of the titular character, which is evident by the visceral and brutal combat on display. While this may look really jarring at first glance especially if you’ve seen some of the more popular and memorable depictions of Wolverine such as the classic X-Men: The Animated series, X-Men Evolution or even most of the cinematic versions of the character.
Cause in those versions, we only see Wolverine using his claws when fighting against non-human entities such as super villains or the Sentinel robots and when fighting fully human foes, Logan generally dukes it out without using his claws at all.
And while Wolverine absolutely slashing through most of the characters in the trailer may seem a bit odd, upon closer inspection they look like cyborgs or non-human, which does make a lot of sense that way. The action feels visceral, brutal and has the potential to be enormously satisfying during gameplay, in more ways than one.
We also see Omega Red as a villain, along with Mystique as well which hints at more characters from the Marvel Universe making an appearance during the events of the game. And during the ending moments of the trailer, we see a huge mutant hunting Sentinel who may end up being one of the bosses at the later parts of the game.
Developer Insomniac has also released another trailer named ‘Behind the Claws’ showcasing several story related details and other design choices regarding the upcoming Wolverine game which fans of the character are sure to enjoy as the devs talk about their vision and ambition with the game. In 2018, Insomniac took Spider-Man and basically reinvented him up to the standards of current-gen AAA gaming, both from technical and mechanical standpoints, and it sure looks like they could pull off the same with Wolverine as well.
The PS5 Exclusive Marvel’s Wolverine is slated to be released during Fall 2026 while Insomniac has also confirmed that they will reveal more on the game in Spring next year.
