Bioshock 4’s development continues to spiral downwards as publisher 2K Games has reportedly laid off around a third of staffs (about 80 people, according to a recent Bloomberg report) at Cloud Chamber, with the game now also delayed from a previously planned release window of late 2026 or early 2027. The publisher has also brought in former Gears of War head and Diablo franchise lead Rod Fergusson as head of the new BioShock game which prabably won’t see the light of day before at least 2-3 years.
A spokesperson for 2K Games has shared an email which was sent to staffs by 2K President David Ismailer and it reads:
“Work on the next BioShock game has been underway for several years. While we’re excited about the foundational gameplay elements of the project, we’ve made the decision with studio leadership to rework certain aspects that are core to a BioShock game, and in doing so are reducing the size of the development team to focus on this work and give the game more time in development.”
“I recognize that today is a day of mixed emotions,” the email continues. “We’re excited to have Rod joining us, and are equally grateful to everyone at Cloud Chamber who has helped us get this far. These changes are rooted in 2K’s firm confidence in BioShock as one of the most beloved franchises, and our commitment to deliver the best game in franchise history.”
This does seem troubling not just from the Studio’s perspective but for Bioshock 4 as well cause great Videogames, like most other works of art, require a singular creative vision which does not gel well with any form of “rework” or meddling. The original Bioshock plus most other great titles that have stood the test of time, are often the result of one cohesive idea rather than multiple ones which can feel like a ‘patchwork’.
But there’s another way to look at this considering 2K’s emphasis on making the “best game in franchise history” which seems like they’re doing all of this with keeping that in mind, so maybe the game could actually benefit from these turmoil in some ways, at least here’s hoping.
Last month it was also reported that Bioshock 4 is undergoing a full narrative overhaul after getting a failed internal review by 2K Games executives.
