One of the prominent characteristics of the narratives in the GTA franchise (as well as in several other Rockstar titles) is the presence of a unique flavor of sarcastic social commentary which often provide a blatantly honest introspection of the real-world society we live in. This particular element that sometimes run parallel to the main narrative is not just lip service, but also lends itself into the character arcs of the games as seen in both GTA 4 and GTA 5, where the real-world themes felt absolutely integral to the overall narrative experiences.
However, it seems the upcoming GTA 6 will take a bit of a different approach to the series’ tasteful blend of social satire and commentaries on many real world topical events, but that’s also partly due to the extremely long development span of the open world title, according to Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North.
In a recent interview with Trois Couleurs, he confirmed that for GTA 6, the devs have consciously avoided extremely topical plot points, as they may become severely outdated by the time the game actually comes out, which is perfectly understandable.
“That’s a very interesting question. We develop on very long cycles. The game’s been in development since 2015, so the idea is gestating for a long time. The majority of the team really started rolling onto it after Red Dead Redemption 2 released in 2018. We have to be very careful about what ideas we choose to put in there, because it can take a long time to figure out what our angle is on this. Because by the time we write it and cast it and shoot it, and implement it, whatever it is – it could be gone, it could change, it could be dated. And so we’re always trying to think about whether something will stand the test of time. And so, you look at those things, and we only try to pick things if they work with the story we’re trying to tell, in the world we’re trying to tell it in. I think there will always be things to satirize; there are always ridiculous situations and behaviors that we can find, but we just have to be careful about what we pick.”
GTA 6 is currently slated to launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026.
