Several new rumors have suggested that Xbox could be moving away from Steam and stop releasing future titles for the massively popular digital storefront, but those have been recently disproved as new details have emerged which suggest that Microsoft’s gaming division actually aims to double down on PC gaming which should put an end to all worries for good. Based on the August 3 report by Jez Corden for Windows Central, the seeming dissolution of partnership between Steam and Xbox which was reported by several outlets, has been officially confirmed to be a negative.
Corden stated: “Something I said on our Xbox Two Podcast this weekend was taken a little bit out of context by some news aggregates, and it led to rumors that Microsoft was exploring quitting Steam. They are absolutely not exploring that (right now), but there is good reason to think Microsoft is evaluating how it engages with Windows gaming all up.”
Corden also explained that PC gaming will continue to be a part of the company’s DNA, and that ‘Xbox is still investing a ton in improving the Xbox PC app.’ Moreover, he said that there are internal plans for expanding Battle.net as well:
“I’ve received information from multiple trusted sources that Microsoft and Blizzard have been planning to open Battle.net up to third-party developers. It’s unclear if that’s still the plan under new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, but so far, I’m not yet seeing evidence that the plans here were canceled.”
So yes, Xbox titles will continue to hit the PC, including the hotly anticipated Gears of War: E-Day which is currently scheduled to release on October 6, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S as well as PC.
Xbox has also brought a new feature named backward compatibility to the PC which allows you “to play classic XBOX games from the past across PC and handhelds” with added graphical advancements and was rolled out for four original Xbox games titled BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge and Fusion Frenzy.
