Steam Forums are quite the toxic place to be in, mainly due to the lack of moderation and the fact that anything seems to go no matter what beliefs are shown. The only decent thing was getting fixes and updates for games that were problematic, but with the current cyber security landscape even that seems to be coming to an end. Cyber Security research has shown that the Steam Forums are now a new attack vector that compromises Windows operating systems, installing a crypto miner inside of them to profit off your own components. This is brutal, but its also expected.
Steam Forums are dangerous
At this point the best thing one can do is just delve into Reddit to see if anyone can help them, or try to find the solution by brute forcing things themselves. There’s nothing more cool than fixing stuff on your own without any proper instructions on what’s happening or what the problem really is. Of course, after that, you might end up booting the game, playing it for a while, and then never coming back to it, happens to the best of us. So many minutes troubleshooting and then its for nothing because you get bored of the game.
Regardless, if you are still a Windows user for some reason you should avoid fixes that require you to execute things via CMD or PowerShell, most of the time you are just getting remote Python scripts installed on your computer that act as sleeping crypto miners. Once the attacker has latched on your PC, they will be able to turn those scripts on and off whenever they desire. It is cruel, but the fact that crypto still exists today remains an injustice that we have to deal with, alas, nothing is being done just yet with this kind of Web 3 tech and other shenanigans affecting the Steam Forums.
