Warzone to Shut Down on PS4 and Xbox One

Warzone to Shut Down on PS4 and Xbox One

Activision has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Call of Duty: Warzone will soon be permanently taken offline, marking the end of an era for the massively popular battle royale. According to recent developer updates, the title will be removed from storefront downloads on June 4, with active servers remaining online only until the upcoming launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 later this year.

The decision signals a definitive shift for the franchise as it finally abandons legacy hardware. While Warzone originally launched in 2020 and saw an unprecedented surge in players during the pandemic, the aging technical architecture of the older consoles has increasingly limited the scope of recent updates. By cutting ties with thirteen-year-old hardware, developer Raven Software aims to fully utilize the processing power and solid-state drives of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

This transition coincides with the release of Modern Warfare 4, scheduled for October 23, which is also confirmed to skip last-generation consoles entirely. Last-gen players can expect to lose access to the battle royale entirely around late October or early November. For millions of players who still rely on the PS4 and Xbox One as their primary gaming systems—especially amid rising hardware costs and recent console price hikes—the news comes as a frustrating barrier to a game they have supported for years.

However, industry analysts and veteran players note that the transition is long overdue. Now six years into the current console generation, major live-service titles have steadily scaled back legacy support, with Sony recently shifting its primary PlayStation Plus focus away from legacy systems. Dropping the technical restrictions of the past allows developers to build more ambitious environments, implement advanced graphical features, and avoid the performance bottlenecks that have plagued recent seasonal updates. While the immediate loss of a massive player base is a risk, the move ensures that the next evolution of Call of Duty can finally move forward without compromise.
