Red Dead Online is the multiplayer component of Rockstar’s open world odyssey Red Dead Redemption 2 that came out back in 2018 and while it has seen regular content updates from the developer, it hasn’t really been in the same ballpark as Rockstar’s own GTA Online in terms of sheer commercial success which still remains a high point for player engagement even to this day.
And while it seems that Red Dead Online didn’t quite reach the sky-high levels of popularity as it’s bretheren, to the point that now it’s largely seen a missed opportunity for the publisher, the CEO of Take-Two Strauss Zelnick says that it’s not a correct assessment at all.
“So let me be clear,” he said, “there is literally nothing about Red Dead selling 85 million units that could signal a missed opportunity. And Red Dead Online has been immensely successful and long lasting.”
“I think if we didn’t have Grand Theft Auto here at our company, then people would just talk about the fact that we have this massive franchise in Red Dead, which we do and of which we’re very proud,” he said. “I actually personally think Red Dead is just amazing and I love engaging with it. And I think the reason it continues to sell is that it’s just spectacular entertainment. It’s beautiful and it feels very up to date despite the fact that it’s not a new title.”
Also, according to Take-Two’s recent financial report, Red Dead Redemption 2 had now sold over 85 million copies, making it the third best-selling videogame of all time, behind only Minecraft and Rockstar’s own Grand Theft Auto 5 which has sold an astounding 230 million copies so far.
However, all eyes are on the upcoming GTA 6 which is easily the most anticipated videogame of all time with it’s official marketing campaign set to kick off this summer and will possibly feature a new trailer plus new gameplay videos and more.
GTA 6 is currently slated to launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026.
