Sony’s recent decision to not release any more of their upcoming Playstation exclusive titles on the PC is definitely one of the most shocking news of 2026 which means if you were waiting on Ghost of Yotei, Insomniac’s upcoming Wolverine or any future God of War games, the only way you’ll be able to experience them from now is by buying a PS5.
Now it was previously speculated that Sony’s move to stop their PC ports entirely was to compete with the next-gen version of Xbox which will be designed to play both PC and Xbox titles, but according to one developer from a Sony studio, it might be in response to Valve’s upcoming Steam Machine instead.
Peter Dalton, Head of Technology at Bluepoint Games, recently posted in Twitter/X that he thinks one reason why Sony has stopped it’s exclusives to be released on PC is to combat the Steam Machine which will be bringing a Steam-based console ecosystem that’s unlike anything the industry has seen. He wrote:
“I read an interesting take on why Sony may be pulling back from pushing PC releases and instead focusing more heavily on exclusives. Some people frame this as a response to Xbox, but I’m not convinced that’s the real driver. A more interesting possibility is the rise of a Steam-based console ecosystem. Consoles largely exist because they provide a cheaper, simpler alternative to gaming PCs. For most households, a dedicated gaming console is easier to justify than building or maintaining a high-end PC.”
“However, if Valve releases a new Steam console that provides a console-like experience while still giving players access to the entire PC game library, that could become a very compelling option. In that scenario, if Sony were releasing all of its games day-and-date on PC, the Steam console could effectively offer the best of all worlds: console simplicity with the full breadth of PC gaming. It would be quite ironic if, after decades of traditional console competition, Valve ultimately ended up winning the console war.”
This certainly presents an interesting possibility why Sony may choose to stay away from the PC community and focus on building their own player base, as the Steam Machine could genuinely prove to be more than a challenger to Playstation’s sheer dominance in the console space cause it can potentially run both PC and PS5 titles, thereby reaching a much more wider audience than Sony.
