Pokemon Bank’s 2027 Shutdown Will Create a Permanent Hole in Pokemon Home Living Dexes

Nintendo and The Pokemon Company have officially set a sunset date for Pokemon Bank on the Nintendo 3DS, announcing that the long-running storage service will permanently go offline on February 26, 2027. While server closures for legacy handheld hardware have become standard practice, this particular shutdown carries a severe consequence for completionists: it will make a full, legitimate “Living Pokedex” in Pokemon Home completely impossible to finish.

The core of the issue stems from an unexpected technical conflict involving the Generation III spot-pattern Pokemon, Spinda. Because of code incompatibilities regarding how Spinda’s unique spot patterns are generated in modern titles, the Pokemon cannot be transferred into Pokemon Home from either Pokemon GO or Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Consequently, the only existing method to register Spinda in Pokemon Home is to transfer one from older games via Pokemon Bank. Once the 3DS service terminates, players who have not already imported Spinda will be completely locked out of completing their Home national Pokedex.

Spinda is currently obtainable on modern hardware within Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl via post-game Swarm encounters on Route 227. However, because those specific transfers are restricted, the creature remains isolated within Sinnoh. This leaves the overall Switch-era Pokedex fractured between local save files and the Home cloud repository. Unless The Pokemon Company introduces Spinda through another compatible release or updates the transfer architecture, player collections on modern consoles will remain permanently incomplete.

There is a slight chance relief arrives before the deadline. Unconfirmed reports suggest ports of original Game Boy Advance titles, such as Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, could arrive on Nintendo Switch with direct Pokemon Home integration—similar to recent releases in the retro catalog. Until such support is officially implemented, however, trainers have a strict timeline to move their legacy collections forward before the bridge between the 3DS and modern hardware is severed for good.
