Back in March, it was reported that Sony will no longer launch their single player games on PC, which used to arrive on the platform around a year or at least several months after their initial release on the Playstation. And instead, only their multiplayer-based titles will be arriving on both PC and Playstation, cause of the obvious need for the sheer playerbase that’s possible from both platforms. But recently, it’s revealed that Playstation dropped all future PC releases mainly due to lack of revenue along with inconsistencies of previous titles.
Jason Schreier from Bloomberg has posted on the ResetEra forum that Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Herman Hulst reportedly told staffs that the reasons why they stopped releasing their single player titles on the PC is cause of inconsistent ports, reduced revenue on the platform and their aim to sort of returning back to the days of exclusivity, which is what rival platform Xbox is currently doing too.
“During a townhall a few weeks ago, Hermen Hulst told staff that their single-player narrative games will be PlayStation only,” said Schreier. “He explained that they were inconsistent with their PC releases, they didn’t make enough money, and they want to keep their IP aligned to their own platform. Confirmed this with two people who heard him say it. There’s no ‘case by case’ here.”
Of course there are several reasons as to why Sony’s PC ports failed to be as successful as they are on their native platform, and one of them is the actual quality of the ports (looking at the PC version of Spider-Man 2) that clearly needed more work in the form of post-release patches to iron out all the existing issues and bugs. And those performance problems have certainly played a role on why those titles on the PC weren’t as popular or successful as their console counterparts.
Also, it means from now on, the only way to play Insomniac’s upcoming Wolverine (and possibly Spider-Man 3 down the line as well), Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Ghost of Yotei and God of War: Laufey is to buy either a PS5 or a PS5 Pro.
