Bungie Studio Head Justin Truman Steps Down Amid Mass Layoffs

Bungie studio head Justin Truman is stepping down from his role following a wave of mass layoffs initiated by parent company Sony. The leadership departure marks a significant turning point for the veteran developer, which is currently undergoing a massive structural reorganization as it shifts its primary operational focus toward its upcoming multiplayer shooter, Marathon.

Truman, a 15-year veteran of the company who previously served as Chief Development Officer, took over leadership duties just last year following the departure of former CEO Pete Parsons. His exit leaves Bungie without an immediate successor named, raising questions among industry analysts regarding how much direct operational control Sony will assert over the studio moving forward.

The structural shakeup follows a challenging period for the studio’s flagship franchise. On June 9, Bungie released the Monument of Triumph patch for Destiny 2, which served as the final major content update for the long-running live-service title. Despite a brief surge in player engagement and critical praise for the final patch, the studio ultimately acknowledged that Destiny 2 had failed to meet long-term commercial and population expectations over the last several years.

According to internal reports, the scale of the layoffs is substantial, affecting a significant portion of the Destiny team alongside select members of the Marathon development group. In an official statement, Bungie management noted that these workforce reductions were a necessary measure to reposition the studio for future projects, though they declined to provide specifics regarding incubation-stage titles currently in development.

Moving forward, Bungie’s primary objective centers on the survival and growth of Marathon, a project Sony still publicly designates as a vital component of its live-service portfolio. The studio is currently preparing for a midseason update in July, which will introduce “Vault Breaker”—the game’s first dedicated PvE mode featuring a separate progression track—as the studio attempts to establish a stable path forward.
