Metro 2039

First unveiled during Mid-April, the upcoming Metro 2039 has already secured a promising one million Wishlists so far, which clearly suggests that the post apocalyptic first person shooter has managed to spark player interests in all the right ways. Developer 4A Games has confirmed the milestone in their social media page recently, stating the following: “#METRO2039 has reached 1 million wishlists We are blown away to reach this milestone so quickly after the reveal. Thank you for your incredible support, we cannot wait to invite you into the Metro this winter.”

The announcement came hot off the wheels of a massive 120 GB leak that surfaced last month which showcased a scrapped version of Metro 2039 from four years ago. And it was also around the same time when the devs decided to pivot to the new story direction of the upcoming game that’s set to be the darkest chapter in the series so far.

The reveal trailer of Metro 2039 focused on the tense and psychological undertones of it’s world and a bleak narrative backdrop but according to series creator Dmitry Glukhovsky, the upcoming game is even more than that and is kind of transcendental experience that somehow surpasses the boundaries of it’s medium in more ways than one. In a recent social media post, he wrote:

“I don’t think Metro 2039 should be called a game. It should be called an experience.”

There’s also a leaked story synapses of the upcoming title (courtesy of IGDB and Insider Gaming) which includes the following:

“The year is 2039. For a quarter century, the last survivors of nuclear war have been locked in bitter conflict deep in the Metro tunnels beneath the poisoned city of Moscow. Now, finally, they have been united by a single leader, a fanatical Spartan known as Hunter.

Experience the most shocking METRO adventure yet in a powerful single-player story that weaves exploration, survival, combat, and stealth across a hauntingly beautiful but deadly world with unparalleled immersion.”

Metro 2039 is currently expected to release in Winter 2026 for all major platforms.
