Ed Boon Confirms NetherRealm is Developing the Next Mortal Kombat

NetherRealm Studios director Ed Boon has officially confirmed that the team is “definitely pursuing” a new entry in the Mortal Kombat franchise. While Boon refrained from sharing a specific release window or title during a recent interview with Collider, the announcement serves as a definitive roadmap for the studio’s future following the conclusion of support for its predecessor.

This confirmation arrives at a critical juncture for the series, following reports that further DLC for Mortal Kombat 1 has been cancelled. The decision to move on reportedly stems from the underwhelming commercial and critical reception of the Khaos Reigns expansion. Despite those specific setbacks, the brand remains a titan in the industry; the base game’s strong initial sales and the success of the recent live-action film adaptations have made a sequel a mathematical certainty for Warner Bros. Discovery.

Boon hinted that while the studio is deep into the next Fatality-filled chapter, it isn’t the only project currently on the stove. Industry analysts and long-time fans have pointed to the persistent Injustice 3 leaks as a sign that the DC Comics-themed fighter might actually hit shelves before the next Mortal Kombat. Boon noted that he would “get in trouble” for revealing more, but the dual-development cycle suggests NetherRealm is returning to its traditional rhythm of alternating between its two biggest properties.

Looking ahead, the narrative path for the next game remains an open canvas. Khaos Reigns concluded the multiversal Havik storyline, leaving Fire God Liu Kang’s new era ready for a fresh antagonist. There is also significant speculation regarding gameplay mechanics; with the Kameo system receiving mixed feedback from the competitive community, the next title may see a return to a more traditional 1v1 format or the revival of the fan-favorite Krypt. For now, the focus shifts to the big screen, as Mortal Kombat 2 prepares to debut in theaters with Karl Urban joining the cast as Johnny Cage.
